Auto Responder: Automatic email (or reply) sent by the email software to the recipient upon an event such as subscription or link click.

Bounce messages: Delivery report email sent back to the return-path email address defined in the outgoing email header of the originally sent email.

Bounce rate: Ratio of bounced emails to total emails sent

Click-through: The action of clicking on a link.

Click-through rate (CTR): Ratio of click throughs to total emails sent.

Demographics: Data about the size and characteristics of audience.

Double opt-in Email: With double opt-in confirmation, subscribed email does not get confirmed immediately. Owner of the email should click the confirmation link included in the received email. The email address is only added to target mail list(s) if email owner confirms the action.

Email Blacklists: Databases of IP addresses and domains that are being used by spammers. A blacklisted IP address can not send an email because most of ISPs filter black listed mail servers.

Email Bounce - Soft: A rejected email by the receiving server for a reason that is most likely temporary such as DNS time out or over quota.

Email Bounce - Hard: A rejected email by the receiving server for a permament reason such as invalid email address.

Email Contextual link: URL incorporated into the email content. These kind of links look less clumsy compared to "click here" links

Email newsletter: An email sent to subscribers with relevant information on a topic. Email newsletters are mainly used to keep in touch with existing customers or members.

Email Marketing Campaign: Email newsletters or email marketing messages delivered at intervals and with an overall objective.

Email Frequency: The intervals of sending the email newsletter or campaign. For example; monthly, bi-monthly, etc.

Email Marketing Subject Line: The title and topic of the email message. Email subject defines the success and readibility ratio of your email newsletter or campaign.

HTML Email Click-through : When a recipient clicks on a link. Click-through rate (CTR) is calculated by dividing the number of clicks to the number of email opens and then multiplying by 100 express the result as a percentage.

HTML Email Unique Opens: The number of different individuals who open the email within a specific period.

Open rate: E-mail open rate measures the ratio of e-mails "opened" to the number sent or "delivered." The ratio is calculated in various ways, the most popular is: e-mails delivered (sent - hard bounces) /unique opens.

Opt-in: Final confirmation and agreeing to receive emails from a particular company mail list(s).

Opt-out: Final confirmation and agreeing to unsubscribe from a particular company mail list(s).

Spam Filter: Software used to filter unsolicited email from a users inbox.

Segmentation (or Targeting): The use of previously gathered information to send e-mails of a particular offer to a subset of the list.

Spam or UBE (Unsolicited Bulk e-mail): From the sender's point-of-view, spam is a form of bulk mail, often sent to a list obtained by companies that specialize in creating e-mail distribution lists. To the receiver, it usually seems like junk e-mail. Spam is equivalent to unsolicited telemarketing calls except that the user pays for part of the message since everyone shares the cost of maintaining the Internet. Spammers typically send a piece of e-mail to a distribution list in the millions, expecting that only a tiny number of readers will respond to their offer.

Unique click: During a particular period, a visitor to a website could click several times on a particular link, but during that period it is counted only as one and considered a unique visitor.

Unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE): The subset of e-mail spam that is also commercial, usually of an advertising nature, sent at the expense of the recipient without his or her permission. Sending UCE is an offense against all major ISPs terms of service, and is a crime in some jurisdictions.
